Aviva – An update on Coronavirus and Aviva Insurance Policies

Commercial Clients – Laid up Vehicles:
If your clients have taken the decision to register any of their vehicles as off the road (SORN) due to the impacts of COVID-19 – and have formally requested their vehicles to be “laid up” – we’ll support your clients who have a Motor Fleet, Mini Fleet or Motor Trade. As there’s no need to insure their vehicle for road use and any potential third-party claims, this will result in a return of premium for your client. Please note, we’re only able to offer this option where the SORN vehicle is being stored at their commercial premises. When their vehicles are ready to go back on the road, we’ll increase the cover back to the level they require.
Business Interruption and Covid 19
Our Business Interruption cover is based on a specified list of diseases and has been since the SARS outbreak in 2003. These policies exclude business interruption due to new and emerging diseases, like COVID-19. Our policy wording clearly identifies the diseases we offer cover for and, in addition, highlights that new and emerging diseases like COVID-19 are not covered.
The current COVID-19 outbreak is therefore not covered under a significant majority of business interruption policies.
Business Travel Policies
Our standard policies will cover any Medical Expenses, Cancellation, Curtailment or Change of Itinerary due to contracting COVID-19. If however, your clients have travelled against the advice of a qualified medical practitioner or against any regulations issued by any government or Public Authority you will not be covered.
Personal Clients – Laid Up Vehicles
In addition to our recent announcement on laid up vehicles for commercial lines, we’re now extending our laid-up vehicle cover to include your personal motor and “Your Van” clients.
For your private motor clients
The current policy terms will apply, with the relaxation of the “car is locked in a private garage” clause and until further notice we will cover your customers vehicles where parked on their driveway.
For your “Your Van” clients
We’re introducing an optional Laid-up Fire & Theft cover until further notice.
Laid-up Fire & Theft Cover can be applied to your clients’ ‘Your Van’ policy subject to the vehicle being SORN. We are only able to offer this option where the SORN vehicle is being stored in a garage, kept in a locked and secured compound, or in your client’s own driveway. All other existing policy conditions will apply, and all tools and equipment must have been removed from the vehicle.
To be eligible for either of these covers your clients must have:
- SORN their vehicles due to the impacts of COVID-19.
- Formally requested their vehicles to be ‘laid up’.
- Be fully aware and understand the implications of this e.g. their vehicle is off the road and cannot be used.
- Their vehicles out of use for a continuous period of 28 days or more.
Once the 28 days have elapsed, we’ll provide you with the appropriate difference in risk premium when the cover has been reinstated and the vehicle is back on the road.
Aviva Private Client Travel and COVID-19
Travel insurance is only available as an optional add-on to our Distinct Home policyholders.
Following a review of the evolving risks posed by COVID-19, we have decided that it is necessary to make some changes to the travel insurance add-on we offer new Aviva Private Clients customers at this challenging time.
Travel insurance is designed to cover unforeseen events and Coronavirus is now a known event which creates a high likelihood that customers’ travel plans will be affected.
For new customers, we have therefore made the decision to pause the sale of the travel insurance add-on to Aviva Private Clients home insurance, from 3pm on Friday 13 March 2020. For more information, please review our FAQ’s here.
We envisage that this decision, which only affects the travel insurance add-on for new Aviva Private Clients customers, will be a temporary action. We will continue to monitor the situation closely.
If your customers currently have this add on, and are due to travel to areas where there is a Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advisory notice in place (no travel / none but essential travel) and wish to cancel their trip, they will be covered.
They would also be covered under policies if they were to contract COVID-19 whilst on holiday or in the UK prior to travel (which was booked before they were aware of the infection).
In addition to this, they would also be covered if quarantined by authorities whilst on holiday (whether they have contracted COVID-19 or not).
If, however, they bought their policy after the FCO advised against travel to their destination, they would not be covered for cancellation/abandonment under these circumstances.
We recommend you review the policy wording for full details of cover but have added some of the frequently asked questions here.
We will, however, always look at each circumstance on its own merits. If your customers have any specific concerns about their situation, we would recommend they contact us directly.
